Extracts from HARARE REPORT 28 JAN – 1 FEB 2008

It has been a very tense week for all the homes and individuals waiting desperately for their money to come through. We are trying to give bridging finance where possible but now that cash has gone short again, this has been a battle, as many of the people in their own homes do not have accounts.

(Name deleted) had a staff problem during the week – the salaries are far too low again and they have not kept up with increases because of the threat still hanging over them of the ‘price control action team.’ We are meeting with the chairman on Monday to see whether we can work out some sort of solution.

We found out from (Name deleted) that their minimum wage for lowest paid workers is $20 million - to get to the high density areas and back is now $16 million. We will be meeting with them later in the week to see how they can proceed from here.

Basically the whole fabric of our society is breaking down and it is hard to see how the place can survive much longer.

FOOD:

(Names deleted) have delivered large quantities of potatoes and eggs to the homes this week – (Name deleted) manged to get potatoes at extremely good price from a friend who is still managing to grow a few things on his farm while living in Harare.

Things here are incredibly hard – parts of Harare (our part actually!) have been without a flicker of power since Wednesday morning and no water since early December.

With love from the Harare team until next week,

ZANE has a first class team on the ground across Zimbabwe. ZANE has systems in place that ensure that every pound donated, is used to its maximum advantage. The money will be prudently used and will go towards the relief of hardship and acute misery.
The cost of care. . .
ZANE has no offices and employs only a small staff in the UK. There are no middlemen and there is no waste.
