Extracts from Harare Report 29 March – 9 April

Please note: Names have been replaced with **** for security reasons.

Sorry about the late report ... but we have had a major problem with viruses on all our memory sticks which infected ****’s, ****’s and my computers. We had to stop working on everything until all the affected devices had been cleaned and fixed. We are now up and running again.

PENSIONERS’ AID:

Homes:

The homes are all battling as prices continue to soar. Transport for workers goes up almost daily and it is impossible to pay salaries for a month at a time.

Giving the homes an interim payment and now a top-up has helped them considerably to deal with the daily expenses.

We have had distress calls from Resthaven in Rusape and Pioneer Lodge in Masvingo – the urgent problem has been food supplies which ***** and ***** have responded to and food deliveries to both homes should take place tomorrow (Thursday)

We are having almost daily calls from people asking for help for individuals and are doing our best to get round to each person and assess their situations.

MEDICAL:

Mrs **** fell last week in ***** and broke her femur - the cost of diagnosis, hospitalisation and surgery has been vast, but luckily she has the means to cover it all and only requires help with organisation from us.

Mrs ***** in ***** has had a series of strokes and is on palliative care - she also has independent means and only needs help in managing her affairs.

***** has been busy orgainising drugs for all our patients as well as those on the drug list .These are increasing in price every day and becoming more difficult to find.

The two main testing labs in Harare are running out of reagents to do many of the basic diagnostic tests and cannot charge enough to be able to replace the chemicals they use - this is a critical problem for people who cannot afford to travel outside the country for medical help.

FOOD:

A food importation arrived in Harare and was distributed by ***** and ***** in the week preceding the election so all the Harare homes have a two month supply of dry goods. Fresh vegetables are being delivered once a week from ***** and these will continue as long as is possible. The biggest milk supplier to the homes was disrupted today, so milk delivery to the homes is now in jeopardy though ***** says she has enough milk powder to keep homes going for few weeks. ***** and ***** have managed to source chickens, pork and eggs for a one-off delivery to the homes next week but meat supplies are very erratic.

***** has good stocks of imported food so are able to keep supplying the individuals with their monthly food parcels. These are not sufficient to last a whole month and people are battling to pay the huge prices of goods in the shops – it is these people in their own homes who are most at risk of malnourishment at the moment.
